A good night starts
with good people.

Respect everyone.

Be kind and considerate to fellow attendees, volunteers, hosts and venue staff. We want people to feel comfortable regardless of their nationality, background, language ability, gender or experience.

• No harassment, intimidation, bullying, discriminatory remarks or threatening behaviour.
• Disagree respectfully. Different opinions are welcome; personal attacks are not.
• Remember that cultural and language differences can sometimes cause misunderstandings. Give people room to explain themselves.

Respect boundaries.

People attend Linguas to meet others and enjoy themselves. That does not mean everyone wants the same kind of interaction.

• Respect a “no,” whether it concerns a conversation, a photo, physical contact or exchanging contact details.
• Do not pressure anyone for phone numbers, social media accounts, dates or ongoing attention.
• Give others space to leave a conversation or join another group without making them uncomfortable.

Make room for conversation.

You don’t need to be fluent in another language, and coming alone is absolutely fine. Help make the night easier for people who are new.

• Introduce yourself, listen as well as speak, and make space for others in the conversation.
• Be patient with learners. Avoid mocking accents, mistakes or language ability.
• Speaking English, practising another language and simply socialising are all welcome.
• Commercial promotion, recruitment or solicitation should not interrupt the event; speak to the organisers first if you would like to collaborate.

Check in before heading to the bar.

For our weekly Tuesday and Thursday language exchange, come to the Linguas reception or host table first. We’ll explain the entry process and provide your wristband.

Saturday socials, Thought Experiment, Respawn and other special events can have different ticket prices, conditions and programmes. Always check the official listing for your date.

Look after yourself and others.

• Follow reasonable directions from Linguas hosts and venue staff, including any venue entry requirements.
• Drink responsibly if you choose to drink. Alcohol is never a requirement to join a conversation.
• Look after your own belongings and treat the venue, furnishings and equipment with care.
• Do not engage in aggressive, unsafe or disruptive behaviour. Hosts or venue staff may ask someone to leave when necessary for safety.

Be considerate with photos.

Linguas events are social occasions, and photographs or videos may be taken. Respect other attendees who do not want to be photographed or filmed, particularly in close-up shots or personal conversations.

If you have a concern about event photography, speak with a Linguas host at the event. Please also ask before publishing images of other people in a way that could make them uncomfortable.

Something doesn’t feel right? Tell us.

If anyone makes you uncomfortable, behaves inappropriately or creates a safety concern, please speak with a Linguas host or venue staff member. You do not need to confront the person yourself.

We may intervene, set boundaries or ask someone to leave to protect the wellbeing of attendees. In an emergency, contact emergency services.
