People meeting at a Linguas Melbourne event

New to Melbourne

July 2026

Welcome to the first edition of the Linguas New to Melbourne Newsletter.

This monthly update is for people who want to get out, meet people, try new places and make Melbourne feel a little more familiar.

We will keep it simple: fun events, social ideas, things happening around the city, partner perks, and a few places worth checking out.

Here’s what is happening this month:

If you are new to the city, the best advice is still the simplest: say yes to one thing each week.

We are looking for Thursday Linguas volunteers

Linguas is growing again, especially on Thursday nights, and we are looking for friendly people who can help welcome new attendees, guide people to the right tables, take photos, support check-in and help keep the event feeling warm and social.

This is a good fit if you enjoy meeting people, international communities, languages, events, content, or hospitality.

New partner perks

We are starting to include selected partner updates for the Linguas community. These are things that make sense for people who are new to Melbourne, travelling, studying, working holidaying or looking for more ways to explore the city.

Fun social events to try this month

If you are trying to build a social life in Melbourne, start with events that are easy to walk into. Language exchanges, gaming nights, casual meetups and small discussion events are usually better than trying to make friends from scratch at a bar.

The goal is not to meet everyone. The goal is to become a familiar face somewhere.

Our top picks for a fun Melbourne week

  • Go to one social event where you can arrive alone.
  • Try a new food spot in the CBD, Carlton, Footscray or Richmond.
  • Visit a bar or cafe with live music.
  • Walk through the city laneways without planning too much.
  • Invite someone you met recently to a second event.

Melbourne is much easier when you stop waiting for the perfect plan and start building small habits.

Event spotlight: language exchange nights

A language exchange is still one of the easiest social events to join because there is already a reason to talk. You can practise English, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Chinese or simply meet people from different parts of Melbourne.

Come alone, bring a friend, or invite someone who has just arrived in the city.

Event rules

Our events are designed to be friendly, social and safe. Most people come to meet new people, practise languages, make friends, or enjoy a relaxed night out in Melbourne.

Be respectful

Treat everyone with respect. Harassment, intimidation, aggressive behaviour, or repeated unwanted attention is not welcome.

This is not a dating event

Linguas is a friend-making and language exchange community. Do not treat the event as a place to pressure people romantically.

Let people move around

People are free to change tables, leave a conversation, join another group, or take a break at any time.

Follow host and venue instructions

Please respect our hosts, volunteers, venue staff, wristband/check-in system, and any venue-specific rules.

Photos and content

We sometimes take photos or short videos at events. If you do not want to be included, please let the host know.

Keep it welcoming

Help new people feel included. A simple hello can make someone’s first night in Melbourne much easier.

Anyone who makes others feel unsafe, uncomfortable or repeatedly ignores boundaries may be asked to leave or removed from future events.

Our friends and partners

Linguas and the wider Intermingle community is built with the support of venues, schools, social groups, travel partners, community friends and people who help make Melbourne feel more connected.

This list will keep growing as we continue building partnerships across Melbourne.
